Do you know if your website is up and running right now? Chances are you don’t. Along with a down website comes a loss in revenue. So why not use Uptime Robot, a free tool to alert you when your website is down?
Uptime Robot monitors your website at 5 minute intervals 24/7 keeping you informed of whether or not your website is up and running.
I use Uptime Robot on all of my websites and I highly recommend the free service to all my clients.
If you want to know when and how often your website goes down, keep reading as I’ll walk you through the process of signing up for this free service and then I’ll show you how to start monitoring your website. The whole process will take less than 10 minutes.
Create a Free Account
Go to Uptime Robot and look at the top right section of their website to locate the signup button. Give it a click.
Next you will enter your first & last name, email address and a password. Now click on Sign-up.
After you click on Sign-up you will be notified to check your inbox for an email that will allow you to activate your account. Yay!
Within the email you receive, click on the link given to you that will activate your account. You will be taken to the Uptime Robot website and you’ll see a message like the one below that informs you of our newly activated account.
Now that your free account has been created, it’s time to add a new monitor.
Add New Monitor
After you get logged in, you will be presented with your dashboard similar to the one shown below. Click on “Add New Monitor.”
Upon clicking “Add New Monitor” you will be presented with a settings screen. Be sure to select HTTP(s) for your monitor type. I use this option because it’s not going to skew your analytics. What I mean by that is that when their bot hits your website every 5 minutes 24 hours a day you could end up with more visits being reported than is actual user visits. But since you selected HTTP(s) they use HTTP HEAD requests and the tracking codes for the analytics services won’t be downloaded. You can learn more about this and other features in their FAQ page.
- Give your monitor a friendly name
- Enter the URL of your website.
- Next you select a monitoring level. By default the interval will be set to 5 minutes. Feel free to adjust the slider to a new interval or leave it at 5 minutes.
- Select how you want to be notified when your website goes down. When you signed up for their service you gave them an email address. This will be in your setup screen as seen below.
- Click on “Create Monitor” and you’re done.
If you look closely at the image above you will see that I not only get notified of downtime by email, but also by SMS on my smartphone.
If you wish to add SMS messaging for your alerts, you can do so by clicking the link “My Settings” from your main dashboard. Scroll down and find “Alert Contacts” and then look for the green button titled “Add Alert Contact” and give it a click. From there you can enter a mobile phone number, another email and other methods in which to be alerted.
That’s all there is to signing up and setting up a website monitor using Uptime Robot.
