Another record breaking week of mileage; 218.5 miles
Week #19 Highlights
- I’m mentally pooped!
- Air France pilots go on strike; the airline I chose to fly to France.
- Holy humidity batman; weekend temps and humidity were horrible.
This has been a tough week of cycling. I pushed it extra hard thinking that this is my last full week of training for the 2016 Allianz cycling tour. I found out Sunday night this wasn’t the case. I have another full week of training and was told by my training coach that my taper/rest would be while flying to France. Ouch.

This was a very hot/humid ride. I felt great for the first 2.5 hours of the ride and then things went quickly downhill.
When I was about 22 miles from the end of my ride my left inner thigh cramped up bad. I got off the bike and was crippled unable to move. I took 5-6 licks of my base salt in hopes of relieving the cramp. Finally it went away and I pedaled to the Charles City Courthouse. While there I sat on a picnic table under a giant shade tree trying to regain my composure. After 15 minutes of rest, I stood up to finish my ride and my thigh cramped again. It took another 15-20 minutes before I was able to get on the bike.
Once back on the bike I took it easy. Real easy. I even ran out of water. During a 4 hour ride I usually consume 4 24oz bottles of water/Gatorade Endurance formula. Today, it took an additional 32oz bottle of Gatorade and 3 24oz bottles of plain water. Damn it was hot!
My last stop for water was at was Momma Lonnie’s Country Stow. Momma Lonnie’s Country Stow is a must-stop family owned deli/convenience store located along the Virginia Capital Trail. They have VERY clean restrooms! Please leave a tip for the restrooms so that they remain open. After drinking another bottle of water I headed out for my last 4 miles of this miserable ride.
I finally make it back to the Four Mile Creek Trailhead and collapse at my car. The heat got the best of me.

Another hot day of riding but no cramps today. I was hoping to average 17.5 mph, but was happy with 17.2 after yesterday’s horrible bike ride.

Allianz Cycling Club Leaderboard
It was a good week to be on the Allianz Club Leaderboard. I’m not going to lie. Even with all my training I still get worried when I see how much climbing the Europeans do on a weekly basis. They simply crush my stats.
I’m glad this week is over! Peace out!The article Training Log Jun 6-12 appeared first on RickRDuncan.com. It was published on and was last updated .
